The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of group music activities on children in second and third grades of elementary school from low-income families and to examine how the group music activities produce an effect on their self-esteem and social skills. The children for the study were in two groups. One group was composed of forty children from low-income families who joined the after-school program at the community center for children in North Kyoungsang province. The other group was also composed of forty children from low-income families who did not join the after-school program. The children in the experimental group joined the group music activity programs for fifty minutes every week from November 13, 2013 to April 2, 2014. for a total of eighteen times. Contents of the program was composed of singing, playing instruments, improvisation, song writing, music, music and body movement. And this study was conducted with the assistance of one social worker. As the result, the group music activities to improve children's self-esteem and social skills had a great effect, especially on the children from low-income families.

본 연구는 초등학교 2, 3학년의 저소득층 아동을 대상으로 집단음악활동을 실시하였을 때 아동의 자아존중감과 사회성 향상에 어떤 영향을 주는지 그 효과성을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 경북 A시에 소재한 종합사회복지관 부설 A지역아동센터의 방과 후 프로그램(집단음악활동)에 참여하는 저소득층 아동 40명과 방과 후 프로그램에 참여하지 않는 저소득층 아동 40명으로 2013년 11월 13일부터 2014년 4월 2일까지 1주일에 1회씩 총 18회기의 50분 수업으로 음악활동 프로그램이 진행되었다. 프로그램의 내용은 노래 부르기, 악기연주, 즉흥연주, 노랫말 만들기, 음악 감상, 음악과 신체움직임으로 구성되었으며, 본 연구자와 사회복지사 한 명의 도움을 받아 진행하였다. 그 결과 집단음악활동은 저소득층 아동의 자아존중감과 사회성 향상에 미치는 영향이 컸는바 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.
