Herman Bavinck’s ideas on education and pedagogy as formed in his later studies have not been well known to Korean church leaders and educators, despite the significance of his contributions to Netherlands Reformed schools as well as his introduction and discussion within many theological studies. This thesis, as a basic step to the fundamental study of his educational thought, comprises a short biography, identifies his concepts of education and pedagogy, and discusses his contributions to the historical development of Christian education. Herman Bavinck made efforts to find a Reformed theological methodology that satisfied the needs of both traditional orthodoxy and modern scholarship, while the other contemporary liberal theologians or evangelicals chose one or the other. The two goals in his theology are also applied to studies on education. His Christian Reformed ideas on education contributed to both Reformed pedagogy and the development of Christian schools. His historical contributions in Christian education are summarized as follows: (1) Bavinck recognized pedagogy and psychology as independent sciences from a Christian view of scholarship, not limiting his interest only to theology, or reducing othersciences to theology. He deduced the foundational significance of pedagogy from the nature of humanity, s cholarship and community. (2) Bavinck did not limit the contents of Christian education to faith, but included also humanity, society, scholarship, nature and culture. He did not limit Christian educational fields to church, but positively discussed both nurture at home and education at schools, which are the most important fields of Christian education. (3) Bavinck explained the uniqueness of Christian education in comparison with other modern educational theories on the basic principles of world views. He demanded positive scientific studies for the Reformed pedagogy and schooling, since there was no neutral pedagogy and schooling free from world views. He convincingly argued the excellence of Reformed Christian education and pedagogy built on the Christian world view.

한국 개혁신학 교육과 연구에서 네덜란드 신학자 바빙크는 잘 알려져 있으나 바빙크의 후기 연구에서 큰 비중을 차지하였던 교육 및 교육학에 대한 사상은 제대로 알려지지 못했다. 이에 본 논문은 바빙크의 기독교교육 사상 탐색의 기초 단계 작업으로서, 그의 생애, 교육 및 교육학에 대한 개념들을 규명하고 기독교교육 역사에서의 의의를 논의하였다. 헤르만 바빙크는 자유주의 신학과 배타적인 복음주의 신학의 극단이 아니라 신학의 학문 작업에서 정통성과 학문성을 동시에 구현해낸 학자이다. 이 두 요소는 개혁신학의 범위를 넘어 개혁 교육학의 확립과 기독교 학교운동의 발전에도 크게 기여했다. 교육과 교육학의 기초적 논의에서 보여준 그의 기독교교육에 대한 역사적 기여는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 바빙크는신학의 학문적 정체성에만 관심과 학문적 의미를 한정하거나, 다른 모든 것을 신학에 환원시키는 것이 아니라, 기독교적 학문관에 기초하여 교육학과 심리학도 독립적인 학문으로 보았다. 특히 교육학의 학문적 중요성과 독특성을 인간과 학문과 공동체의 본질로부터 규명하는 적극적 과제를 수행하였다. 둘째, 기독교교육의 내용을 신앙에 그리고 교육의 장을교회에 한정하지 않고, 교육 내용에 있어 인간과 사회와 학문과 자연과 문화를 그리고 장에서 가정 교육과 학교 교육을 적극적으로 논의함으로써 기독교교육학이 수행해야 할 정당한 과제의 범위를 제대로 규명하였다. 셋째, 기독교교육의 독특성은 기독교 세계관에 있다는 것과 교육 이론들의 차이는 세계관에서 온다는 것을 제대로 간파하였고, 그 맥락에서중립적 교육이란 불가능하므로 기독교 공동체는 기독교 학교 및 기독교 교육학을 정립해야 한다는 이론적 작업의 정당성과 필연성을 명료하게 드러내었다. 그는 참교육이라는 관점에서 기독교 학교와 기독교교육학이 지닌 탁월성에 대한 확신을 기독교 공동체에 제공하였다.
