With increasing internationalization, many loan words have come into Japan in a rapid pace recently. It is common in Japan to represent loan words in katakana now. However it is quite difficult to represent English words, which have CVC structure (closed syllable structure) basically, using Japanese words, which have CV structure (open syllable structure) basically. In addition, English language has much more consonants and vowels than Japanese language. When English words with a wide variety of phonemes come into Japan, some of those phonemes are integrated into one Japanese phoneme. There are many problems in representing loan words like that. When you look at the contents and the composition of “Cabinet Notifications and Directives: The Notation of loan word,” which is the standard in representing loan words, you can see many problems. The objective of this thesis is to present those problems in order to help revise them in the future. This thesis provides three major problems: 1) problem of composition; 2) problem of presenting original language; 3) problem of usage. Future tasks about those problems are also provided: 1) to review the need of “Chart 1 & 2”; 2) to represent foreign sound (original sound) in the body text using English notation; 3) to regularize the rejection of all usages and more than one notation. Creation of comparative table of English international phonetic symbols and katakana are also proposed.
