Cheongwansa(天冠寺) was built by Tongryeong(or order of the top leader of the Buddhist Hwaeom Order) as a Buddhist Hwaeom Order and the place where Cheongwanbosal(天冠菩薩) stays. Though there are many records on Cheongwansa and Cheongeansan, there have not been sufficient researches on its architectural aspects including its building arrangement. This research aims to examine its architectural aspects including arrangement of its buildings. The findings of the research are as follows. First, the remaining structures discovered by excavation identified sites of 10 building including Geungrakjeon(極樂殿) and Jeokgwangjeon(寂光殿). Such remaining structures match records in the Jijaeji( 支提誌). We can identify that until the late Joseon dynasty when the Jijaeji was written, such buildings had existed. Second, Geungrakjeon and Jeokgwangjeon form separate areas with surrounding buildings, and have different axises, which seems to be related with changing process of the temple recorded in the Jijaeji. Third, the whole area of the temple can be divided into the Buldan(佛壇), the Bosaldan(菩薩壇), and the Seungdan(僧壇), and it can also be classified into two areas: the prayer space and the living space. Each area is separated from each other by land height, a common aspect found in Korean Buddhist temples including Buseoksa founded in the Unified Silla period, Bulguksa, and Haeinsa.

천관사는 통령화상에 의해서 창건된 화엄종 계열의 사찰이며, 천관보살의 상주처로서 건립되었다. 이러한 천 관사는 천관산과 함께 많은 기록이 전하지만, 가람배치나 건축적인 부분의 연구는 미진한 것으로 파악되었다. 이에 본 연구는 천관사의 과거 가람배치와 건축적 특징을 규명하고자 한 연구로 이에 대한 결론은 다음과 같 다. 첫째, 발굴 유구상으로 확인된 건물지는 극락전, 적광전을 비롯한 10동으로 확인되었다. 이러한 유구는 지제 지(支提誌)의 기록과 대부분 일치하며, 지제지가 작성된 조선 후기까지 이러한 전각들이 실재했음을 확인할 수 있다. 두 번째, 극락전과 적광전은 각각 주변전각들과 함께 영역을 이루며 축선을 달리하는 것으로 보아 지제지의 기록 중 사찰의 변화과정과 관련된 것으로 보인다. 세 번째, 사찰 전체의 영역은 불단, 보살단, 승단으로 구분할 수 있으며, 이는 다시 예불공간과 생활공간으로 분류된다. 각 영역들은 지반의 높이 차이에 의해서 구분되며, 이는 통일신라시대 창건된 부석사를 비롯하여 불국사, 해인사에서도 확인할 수 있는 공통된 특징이다.
