This is the study of analyzing the responses of Koreans when they are refused in intercultural contact between Korea and Japan. The analysis has been conducted by the speech strategy, which is how they finish their speech. Furthermore, it noted the characteristic discovered in overall patterns of the response and reasons of refusal. First of all, Korean respondents reacted to Japanese refusal by using 5.4 speech strategies on average. Secondly, although Koreans preferred ｢そうか?｣, other strategies were also found widely available. It turned out that a variety of response-strategies were spoken by individual respondents. Thirdly, The reasons of refusal made responsive patterns different. In particular, There were considerable differences between ｢そうか?｣ and ｢もう一回｣ in speech strategy. In case of psychology and principle reasons, ｢もう一回｣ strategy was chosen by showing rather positive reaction. However, in lack of ability, ｢そうか｣ strategy was chosen by showing convincing and acceptable reaction. As we can tell by the result of the study above, all the aspects of Korean respondents were considered in the refusal between Korea an Japan. This implies that in-depth study on the case of Korean-spoken circumstances is needed to comprehend the role of intermediary language in intercultural contact. The further study on this should be carried on.
