This article aims to examine the process by which Hong Sunmyung realized his thoughts of building a village community. The exploration of his thoughts and the steps he took to achieve them will elucidate the process by which Poolmoo school and Hongdong village, a good model in our society. Hong Sunmyung has lived as a educator and community practitioner based on such main thoughts as education for common people living together, education for life and peace, agricultural education valuing life, lifelong education for sustainable society, and school embracing village. He has utilized various strategies in his efforts to build an ecologically sound, autonomous village formed around Poolmoo school. He has involved in co-op movements and in the establishment of the Poolmoo agricultural college and the village library. This article is meant to provide, through the analysis of Hong Sunmyung's efforts and educational thought, insight to those who are interested in community building.

본 연구는 충남 홍성군의 홍동마을이 생태적인 자치마을로 발전할 수 있었던 중요한 요인으로 기독교학교인 풀무학교가 있었다고 보고, 평생을 풀무학교와 함께 하면서 마을공동체 형성에 중요한 기여를 해온 홍순명의 사상과 실천을 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. 홍순명은 더불어 사는 평민교육, 생명과 평화교육, 생명을 존중하는 농업교육, 지속가능사회를 위한 평생교육, 마을과 함께하는 학교 등을 중요한 교육사상으로 삼고 교육자와 공동체운동가로서 살아왔다. 그는 이러한 생각들을 토대로 풀무학교가 위치한 홍동마을을 생태적이고 자치적인 마을공동체로 만들기 위해 다양한 노력을 기울여왔다. 마을공동체를 만들기 위한 그의 실천적 노력은 오래전부터 적극적으로 참여해 온 협동조합운동에서 잘 나타나고, 풀무학교 전공부의 개교와 마을도서관 설립을 위한 노력에서 특히 두드러진다.
