This study analyses successful Sunday schools in the United States. The goal is to learn from their strategies and find solutions to the decline in Sunday schools in Korea. Meanwhile many American churches have been experiencing similar decline in their Sunday school attendance, there are three churches that stand out for their booming children’s ministry. The churches are; Willow Creek Community Church (South Bamington, IL), Saddleback Church (Lake Forest, CA), and North Point Community Church (Alpharetta, GA). The research examines the characteristics and strengths of the three churches’ Sunday school ministry. The author also looks at Metro Ministries (Brooklyn, NY) for its parachurch movement and world widely popular ministry. Bill Wilson, founder of Metro Ministries, devoted his life to reaching children, because he had been nurtured in Sunday school after being abandoned by his mother. The findings show that the senior pastors of the three model churches have been actively involved in Sunday school, and considered it as one of their core pastoral ministries. In addition, the most important characteristic that the churches have in common is the senior pastors’ interest and absolute commitment to Sunday school ministry. This suggest that a ministry depends upon its leader’s focus and priority, and Korean churches are no exceptions. This research provides valuable prospects to Korean churches and the future of their Sunday school ministry.

본 논문은 미국교회 교회교육을 리드하고 있는 대표적인 몇 교회의 특징을 분석한 것이다. 침체되어 가고 있는 한국교회 교회교육 상황을 타개하고 극복하기 위한 대안으로 삼고자 하기 위함이다. 초기 한국교회에 복음을 전해 주었던 미국교회들도 최근 교회교육 영역에서 동일한 침체현상을 걷고 있지만, 그 가운데서도 눈에 띄게 발전하면서 교회들의 주목을 받고 있는 3 교회, Willow Creek Community Church(South Bamington,IL), Saddleback Church(Lake Forest,CA), North Point Community Church(Alpharetta,GA)를 선정하여, 해당교회들의 교회 교육적 특징을 살펴보았다. 아울러 파라쳐치(Para Church) 교회교육 운동으로 미국 뿐 아니라 전 세계적으로 주목받고 있는 Metro Ministry(Brooklyn,NY)의 특징을 각각 살펴본 것이다. 본 논문의 연구결과, 선정된 세 교회는 공통적으로 담임목사들이 교회교육의 전문가들이었으며, 교회교육을 자신들의 목회사역 중심에 두고 있었음을 발견하였다. 메트로 미니스트리의 빌윌슨목사도 어린 시절 엄마로부터 버려진 자신을 , 어느 기독교인이 주일학교로 인도하여 아름답게 자라게 한 경험이 결정적인 계기가 되어, 한 평생 교회교육 사역에 헌신하게 되었음을 알 수가 있었다. 이상 세 교회와 메트로 미니스트리의 가장 중요한 특징은 담임목회자들의 교회교육에 대한 절대적인 헌신과 관심에서 비롯되었다는 사실이다. 목회는 담임목회자의 관심사의 우선순위에 따라 그 중요성과 사역이 강조될 수 밖에 없는 것이다. 한국교회도 예외가 아니라고 본다. 본 논문이 밝힌 이러한 사실은 향후 한국교회의 교회교육을 전망하는데 중요한 단서를 제공해 주고 있다고 볼 수 있겠다.
