Recent occurrences of debates and movements with regards to the East Sea/Sea of Japan naming issue reconfirm that there are groups of actors in this naming game with diverse interests and perspectives. Governments, as the main actor of the game, try to persuade other actors with tracks of arguments and counter-arguments. Given the parallel realities going forward without meeting each other, there could be some options for agreement suggested other than two extremes of the Korean and Japanese positions; looking for alternative methods of showing two names; listing all the names in one map as a table; distinguishing international from domestic use of the name and agreeing on a new name for international use. It is suggested that the next focus should be placed on the meanings of human and its applicability to such elements as value, justice, perception or cultural heritage. This focus on human can be developed with concepts of education value and social justice, people’s strong emotional ties and perception to the feature and its name, and growing emphasis on geographical names as having higher value as cultural heritage.

최근 동해 표기를 둘러싼 한-일간의 공방과 세계적인 움직임은 이 문제에 다양한 이해와 관점을 가진 주체들이 활동하고 있음을 확인해준다. 이 지명게임의 주요 행위자로서 양국의 정부는 여러 흐름의 주장과 반론으로 다른 행위자들을 설득하려는 노력을 지속한다. 서로 접점을 찾을 수 없는 이러한 평행선을 긋는 현실 하에서 양 극단을 이루는 한국과 일본의 입장 사이에서 합의에 이를 수 있는 몇 개의 대안이 제시되어 왔다. 두 이름을 보여주는 대안적인 방법을 찾는 것, 하나의 도면에 표로 모든 이름을 나열하는 것, 국제적 사용과 국내적 사용을 구분하여 국제적 사용을 위한 새로운 이름에 합의하는 것이 그것이다. 동해 표기 문제 해결을 위한 향후 방향으로서 보다 ‘인간’의 측면에 집중할 것이 제안된다. 가치, 정의, 인식, 문화유산의 문제가 모두 이와 연결된다. 이러한 ‘인간’ 중심의 방향은 교육적 가치와 사회정의, 바다와 그 이름에 대해 갖는 정서적 밀착과 인식, 그리고 문화유산으로서 지명이 갖는 점차 높아지는 가치부여 등으로 발전시켜 나갈 수 있다.
