The aim of this study was to examine the architectural and spatial characteristics of cultural facilities designed by overseas architects in the Jeju Special Self-governing Province. The study methods included empirical research through literature study and a field investigation. The resulting data were collected and subjected to architectural and spatial analyses. The general characteristics indicated that the subject cultural facilities were equipped with the best geographical conditions for appreciation of the Nature of Jeju and their low-rise elevation scale conformed to the natural landscape of Jeju. However, the facilities were mostly dedicated for members and they lacked communication about the cultural facilities with Jeju residents. The architectural characteristics indicated that the plane types of the subject cultural facilities were mostly square and linear, their section types were slant ground and flatland, their visiting type was selective visiting, and their light source types were sidelight and top light. The spatial characteristics indicated that most of the subject cultural facilities had characteristics of dynamic space in kinematic dimensions; many cases tended to strengthen hierarchy by the formation of multi-layered space in a hierarchical dimension, and in all cases, the expression of space was attempted through light in a phenomenological dimension.
