The purpose of this paper is to analyze the challenges for the peace in korean peninsula and to grope for the national strategic directions to meet the challenges. For this purpose, this paper has the following structure. First, it investigates the conditions of around the Korean peninsula. Second, it studies the challenges for the peace in the Korean peninsula. Finally, it seeks for the strategy to counter the challenges. As result of the studies, the findings are followings. First, the characters of the conditions around the Korean peninsula are leftovers of cold war; regional hegemonic conflicts between north triangular relation(Russia, China and North Korea) and south triangular relation(USA, Japan, and South Korea). Second, the challenges for peace settlements are thresholds to solve nuclear problem, to unify peacefully between SK and NK, to achieve the advanced state. Finally, the strategies to counter the challenges are followings: First, it should create non-nuclear area in the Korean peninsula by PSA(Positive Security Assurance) and NSA(Negative Security Assurance) and then constructs the international system for peace; Second, the unification movement should be led for long-term perspective by peaceful method.; Third, we need to join the groups of the advanced nations in terms of the economic and political reedom.
