The objective of this research is to find out what the Korean traditional changing ofSooMunJang and the United Kingdom's ceremony of changing the guard suggests us byperforming comparative analysis as well as research of the United Kingdom HouseholdDivision's history of transition, organization, and their missions since 1660. The Royal Household is a constitutional monarchy and served by the Household Divisionfor 350 years as a symbol of the United Kingdom. The Household Division is a regulararmy that is affiliated to British Army. The Guards Division consists of two cavalry regimentsand five infantry regiments along with the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. TheHousehold Division not only escorts the king, guards royal palace, and attends a officialfunction, but also dispatched to a combat area as the most elite troops. Similarities in aspect of king escort, palace guard, and succession of tradition were foundfrom the comparison between Korean and the United Kingdom's changing of the guard. On the other hand, fundamental purpose and objective, process of forming a touristattraction, organization were distinctive. While the Household Division and the Royal Household became a worldwide symbol ofthe United Kingdom, Korean changing of SooMunJang is insufficient to represent Koreantraditional royal guard custom and just reenacting historical tradition to emphasize thesuccession of tradition and to develop tourism. Therefore, this research is suggesting methodsto improve the cultural contents of distinctive Korean traditional royal guard and escort ofroyal family.

이 연구는 1660년부터 지금까지 350여년이란 역사를 가지고 있는 영국 왕실근위대의변천사와 조직구조, 임무 에 관한 조사와 함께 왕실근위대 교대식과 한국 수문장 교대식의비교 분석을 통해 우리에게 시사(示唆)하는 바가 무엇인지 밝혀보고자 했다. 연구 결과를요약하자면 입헌군주제를 유지하고 있는 영국왕실은 영국을 대 표하는 상징으로써 350년동안 왕을 호위하는 왕실근위대가 존재해왔다. 왕실근위대는 영국 육군 소속의 정규 군으로현재 2개 기병연대와 5개 보병연대를 비롯하여 왕립기마포병대 등이 하나가 되어 왕실근위사단을 이루 고 있다. 이들의 임무는 크게 구분하면 왕을 호위하고 궁 경비, 국가 의식행사에 동원되는 임무 외에 최정예 부대로 전투에도 참여하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 영국의 왕실근위대와 한국 수문장 교대식 비교에 있어서는 왕 호위, 궁 경비 등과 전통계승 차원이라는 점에 서 유사점을 찾을 수 있었고, 반면 기본적인 취지와 목적, 광관상품화과정, 전담조직 등에서 차이점을 발견할 수 있었다. 왕실근위대는 영국을 대표하는 세계적인 이미지로 잡아온 반면, 한국 수문장 교대식은사적자료의 고증을 통 한 문화재연 행사로 전통계승, 관광산업적 측면을 강조해왔지만, 세계의 유일의 독특한 왕실 호위 및 경비 문 화를 전반적으로 담을 수 있는 콘텐츠로는 미흡한 점이 있어 이를 개선할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다.
