This study suggests that it is necessary to expand the extension for multi-culture learners used in Korean education and aims to present the premise and method of raising the ‘Korean expression ability” that should be raised at multi-culture Korean class. Today’s students who were born in the transition period toward a multi-cultural society will grow up to live in a multicultural society in which many more cultures than now are mixed and combined together. To effectively solve several problems or conflict status in modern society where people with diverse culture or value coexist, it is essential to have the expression ability to effectively and suitably perform various kinds of communication including conversation, negotiation, discussion and debate. To raise the expression ability required in the multi-cultural age, ability to accept the difference and to consider others should be prepared. For this purpose, it should be taught to improve prejudice or negative perception on other people or culture that may interrupt the effective communication at multiculture society and not to use expression that belittle or ridicule culture of others or racial discrimination expression. It is also required to learn the strategy or function to use for communication when encountering different race, country or culture, and to have open and receptive attitude for other culture.

이 연구에서는 국어 교육 내에서 사용되고 있는 다문화 학습자에 대한 외연을 보다 확대할 필요가 있음을 제 안하고, 다문화 국어 교실에서 길러주어야 하는 ‘국어 표현 능력’을 길러줄 수 있는 전제와 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 다문화 사회로의 과도기에 태어난 오늘날의 학생들은 성장한 뒤에는 지금보다 훨씬 더 많은 문화들이 혼재하 고 융합되어 있는 다문화 사회를 살아가게 될 것이다. 다양한 문화나 가치를 가진 사람들이 공존하는 현대 사 회에서 여러 가지 문제나 갈등 상황을 효과적으로 해결하기 위해서는 대화나 협상, 발표, 토의, 토론 등 다양 한 유형의 의사소통을 효과적이고 적절하게 수행할 수 있는 표현 능력이 필수적인 것이다. 다문화 시대에 요구되는 표현 능력을 길러주기 위해서는 ‘다름에 대해 인정’하고 ‘상대방을 배려할 수 있는 능 력’이 전제되어야 할 것이다. 이를 위해 다문화 사회에서 효과적인 의사소통을 방해할 수 있는 다른 민족이나 문화에 대한 부정적 인식이나 선입견을 개선하고, 인종 차별적 표현이나 상대방의 문화를 비하하거나 조롱하 는 표현 등을 쓰지 않도록 교육해야 한다. 그리고 다른 인종이나 국가, 문화를 만났을 때 소통하기 위해 사용 할 수 있는 전략이나 기능을 익히고, 다른 문화에 대해 개방적이고 수용적인 태도를 가질 수 있도록 지도해야 할 것이다.
