This study compared and analyzed three types of social studies textbook for American elementary school which may provide the implications for the development direction and Unit framework of social studies textbook for Korean elementary school. The implications resulted from this study are as follows. First, the social studies textbook should be improved by including various and abundant information of teaching and studying. Second, various content composition formats in accordance with each unit and subject should be used. Third, it is necessary to develop the appropriate structure and components of textbook for the level and interest of students. Fourth, it is needed to make good use of concrete material and story that are close to the life of students. Fifth, it is necessary to introduce the narrative composition which makes a connection between the learning content and method. Sixth, it is needed to use the questions that arouse students’interest and attention and aim for the learning objective. Additionally, it is required to expand the study and support of textbooks and curriculum books.

본 연구는 미국의 초등 사회교과서 3종을 비교․분석하여 교육과정 수시부분개정체제에 따 른 한국의 초등 사회교과서 개발 방향과 내용구성방식에 대한 시사점을 찾고자 하였다. 본 연 구의 결과 초등 사회교과서는 다음과 같은 방향에서 새로운 시도가 필요하다. 첫째, 사회교과 서는 많은 자료를 좁은 지면에 압축하여 제시하는 형태에서 적합한 자료를 선정 조직하여 실 제 학습에 적극 활용되도록 변화할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 사회교과서는 단원과 주제의 성격에 따 라 다양한 형태의 내용구성방식으로 구성될 필요가 있다. 셋째, 사회교과서는 학생의 수준과 흥미를 고려한 다양한 외형체제로 개발될 필요가 있다. 넷째, 사회교과서는 학생들의 생활과 밀접한 소재나 이야기를 다각도로 활용할 필요가 있다. 다섯째, 사회교과서는 학습의 내용과 방법을 연계하는 내러티브적 구성방식으로 제시될 필요가 있다. 여섯째, 사회교과서는 단원의 목표를 지향하는 질문방식을 체계화하여 제시할 필요가 있다. 이와 같은 사회교과서 내용구성 체제를 위하여 사회 교과용 도서에 대한 지속적인 연구와 지원을 확대시켜 나가야 할 것이다.
