This study has been carried out to conceptualize golf, to explore its history, and to discuss a possibility of finding its academic value in relation to the relevant academic fields in sports studies. Golf is believed to be originated as a sport for the common people from the early 16th century in the east coast of Scotland and it was introduced to Korea by British officials playing in the west coast of Woensan in the 1900s. The concept of this sport can be described that curbed clubs are used to hit a small ball in a course variously constructed with natural field shapes and the winning is decided by the less shots. Furthermore, golf has various academic values including history, philosophy, kinetics, psychology, training, nutrition, education and management. Therefore, a cross-disciplinary trials are needed to promote golf studies based on the academic values and the effort can contribute to found academic identity of golf as well as to set an appropriate navigation for the future golf culture.

본 고(考)는 골프의 개념을 정리해보고 역사를 탐색한 후 체육학을 포함한 여러 학문 영역과 연계할 수 있는 골프의 학문적 가능성을 논의해 보고자 수행되었다. 골프는 16세기 초엽부터 스코틀랜드의 동부 연안에서 행해진 서민 스포츠로써 점차 왕실과 귀족계층이 선호한 귀족스포츠로 자리매김 하였고, 국내에는 1900년경 영국인들에 의해 원산 해변에서 최초로 소개되어 오늘에 이르고 있으며, 그 개념은 굽은 모양의 특수하게 제작된 클럽으로 특정한 필드 즉, 목적에 의해 다양한 자연적 장애물들로 구성된 다양하면서 플레이에 방해요소들을 가진 지형의 필드에서 작은 공을 쳐서 최소의 타구 횟수로 승패를 결정하는 스포츠라고 정의할 수 있다. 골프는 역사, 철학, 역학, 심리, 신체단련, 영양, 교육, 경영 등의 학문적 가치를 내재한 스포츠이고, 이러한 골프의 학문적 가치에 기초를 둔 융복합적 연구의 활성화를 통해 발전시킬 필요가 있으며, 이러한 노력은 결국 골프의 학문적 정체성 확립은 물론이며 골프문화의 올바른 좌표를 설정하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
