Despite the century-long persecution that produced thousands of martyrs in Chosun dynasty, The Roman Catholic Church in South Korea has seen prodigious growth for last two hundred years. Due to the persecution, Catholic Church has unique architectural heritage that includes the memorial cemetery of the martyrs, their martyrdom places, and the villages for the Christians fleeing from the persecution. In spite of the enthusiastic efforts and interest in developing these architectural heritages, these holy site has not been developed properly mainly due to the intermittent financial support. Recently, as regional government started to pay attention to these heritages a cohesive and gradual development plan is inevitably required to prevent an indiscreet development and impairments. This study aims to suggest the significant considerations in designing Korea Catholic sanctuaries, based on the analyses and comparisons of the case studies focusing on the spatial organization and its facilities.

한국 가톨릭교회는 200년 역사를 이어오면서 첫 시작부터 박해를 경험해야 했다. 박해 때문에 순교자 들, 순교터, 순교자 묘, 박해를 피해 형성된 교우촌 등 다른 종교, 다른 종파에서 볼 수 없는 독특한 문 화유산이 생겨났다. 일찍이 가톨릭교회는 순교자들의 행적에 관심이 많았다. 하지만 재정이 가능할 때마다 간헐적으로 성지가 조성되어, 마스터플랜에 따른 체계적인 조성이 어려웠다. 또한 최근에는 지역경제와 연계하여 성지 조성사업이 활성화되면서 자칫 무분별한 개발로 주변 자연의 훼손과 가톨 릭 순교문화의 가치가 훼손될 우려도 생겨나고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 한국 가톨릭 순례성지의 바람직한 조성방향 제시를 목적으로, 이미 조성된 순례성 지를 5가지 유형으로 분류하고 각 유형별로 사례조사 대상 성지를 선정하여, 각 성지의 공간구성과 구성공간별 시설들을 비교, 분석하였다.
