This paper examines the drivers behind women's participation and creation of literature during a certain period in the history of classical literature of Korea and Japan, and the resulting novels by female writers of the two countries. The purpose of this paper is to examines the driving force of the flourishing of literature during the Japanese Heian period and Korean Chosun period with consideration given to the literature, society, and culture at large. In the Chosun and Heian period, when people were subject to hereditary social classes and male bureaucrats held control over the closed society, women were victims of arranged marriages and had to passively depend on men in order to communicate with outside world. This paper identified women, who were the main agents of classical women's novel, as marginal one in the realm of culture, status and space. The suppression felt by women under the rigid class system came to be reconstructed by way of literary expression, and their lives’ ordeals were expanded to their views of the external world in its entirety. These drivers were what led to the birth of women's novel in the two countries.

본 논문은 한국과 일본, 양국의 고전문학사에 존재하는, 여성이 주체로서 문학을 향유하고 창작한 일정한 시기의 동인(動因)과 그 결과로서 나타난 여성 장편 소설에 대한 고찰이다. 양국의 두 문학 공간 사이에는 시대의 격차가 존재하고 양국의 직접적인 영향 관계가 성립되지 않음에도 불구하 고 그 태동과 발전 양상에는 많은 유사점을 확인할 수 있다. 본고에서는 양국의 고전 장편 여성소설의 주체였던 여성들이 문화와 신분, 공간상에 있어 각각의 경계에 존재했던 경계인이라는 사실을 확인하였다. 각각의 경계에 존재하는 경계인으로서의 여성 의 내부에는 불완전함이 각인되어 있었으며, 그들이 가지는 통합과 분리의 잠재력은 동력이 되어 그들의 자기서사화를 촉발시켰다. 아울러 그러한 동인에 의해 양국의 여성 장편 소설이 탄생할 수 있었던 것이다
