A tale, is passed down by being included in the eccentric part of Samguk Yusa written by Ilyeon. This tale was widely used as literary materials with the relationship story that King Jinji's affection for Dohwanyeo gets results after their death and the epic stor about a half-human and half-ghost, Bihyeongrang's birth and amazing activities. Creators newly recreated the tale through musicals and dramas of motif and the works transformed as performing arts includes potential human desire and values about society. A musical, faithfully maintains the original text and gives weight to the love affairs, but a drama, focuses on social problems and so expresses aspirations for a new era. However, these two works clearly reflect on the delicate observation about reality. Creators are absorbed in and embody the past images in order to show the present-day reality of our society riddled with distrust and crises. And also, they are sensitizing and urging people to the importance of prototypical and primary things urge. The musical, and the drama, enhanced the values of the original text through the expansion into various topics and detailedly explained the parts not noted or the ambiguous parts in literary history all the while and two works were performed so that they might appeal to the public.

<도화녀와 비형랑> 설화는 일연이 쓴 『삼국유사』기이편(紀異篇)에 실려서 전하고 있다. 이 설 화는 진지대왕의 도화녀를 향한 애정이 사후에야 결실을 맺게 되는 결연(結緣)담과 반인반귀(伴 人伴鬼)인 비형랑의 출생과 신이한 행적을 중심으로 하는 영웅담으로 그동안 문학적 소재로 많이 사용되었다. 설화 <도화녀와 비형랑>를 모티프로 한 뮤지컬과 연극을 통하여 창작자들은 설화를 새롭게 재창 조하였는데, 공연예술로 변용한 작품에는 그동안 잠재되어 있던 사회에 대한 인간의 욕망과 가치 관이 고스란히 담겨져 있다. 뮤지컬 <도화녀와 비형랑>은 원전을 충실히 이행하면서 애정문제에 비중(比重)을 두어서 작품을 다루고 있는 한편 연극 <로맨티스트는 죽었다>에서는 사회적인 문 제에 집중하여서 새로운 시대에 대한 열망(熱望)을 작품 속에서 다루고 있다. 그렇지만 이 두 작품 속에는 분명히 현실에 대한 섬세한 관찰이 엿보인다. 불신(不信)과 위기(危機)로 점철된 오늘의 사회적 현실을 보여주기 위해서 창작자들은 과거의 모습에 열중하고 형상화한다. 또한 저항(抵抗) 과 일탈(逸脫)의 형식을 찾아 나선 대중들에게 원형적이고 본래적인 것에 대한 중요성과 회귀(回 歸)를 촉구하고 있다. 뮤지컬 <도화녀와 비형랑>과 연극 <로맨티스트는 죽었다>는 다양한 주제로의 확장을 통하여 원 전의 가치를 고양(高揚)시키는 한편 그동안 문학사에서 주목하지 않았던 부분이나 혹은 모호한 부 분들을 상세하게 설명하면서 현실의 대중들에게 공감을 얻을 수 있도록 공연되었다.
