This study presented a new narrative structure of and revealed which intrinsic correlation each step had. In , the conflict that enables the narrative progress occurs between loyalty and ‘calling’. If examining focusing on this conflict, has a narrative structure of granting calling→refusing calling→accepting calling→performing calling→completing calling’. Calling is granted to Chungryeol as soon as he was born. On the surface, this calling is to win in the fighting against Jeonghandam, to save the imperial family including an emperor, to be the commander in chief of Daemyeongguk Daesama and in depth, to save the world fallen into chaos due to the coming evil and to restore order. But when Chungryeol refuses this calling, hardship occurs to Chungryeol and those around him. Of course, Chungryeol does not reveal intention of this refusal clearly. But he takes the form of not recognizing calling or neglecting it while settling in reality and this is ‘passive calling rejection.’Then, once the scheduled time comes, Chungryeol ‘accepts’ calling and restores the appearance of a hero through the process of self-nirvana. At that time, Jeonghandam expresses his nature of evil and the emperor falls into danger. At last, Chungryeol clearly recognizes his calling and saves the emperor and ‘performs’ calling by winning in the fighting against Jeonghandam. However, calling is not completed yet. By restoring the order and completion of the world achieved by him to the real world and winning the fight with himself, Chungryeol is changed from a mental hero to a combat hero. Thereby, calling is ‘completed’.

이 글은 『유충렬전』의 서사 구조 모형을 제시하고, 각각의 단계들이 어떠한 내적 상관관계를 지 녔는가를 밝힌 것이다. 『유충렬전』에서 서사적 진행을 가능케 하는 갈등은 ‘충렬’과 ‘召命’ 사이에서 발생한다. 이를 중심 으로 분석하면, 이 작품은 ‘소명 부여→소명 거부→소명 수용→소명 수행→소명 완성’의 서사구조 를 갖는다. 충렬은 탄생과 함께 소명을 부여받는다. 이 소명은 표면적으로는 정한담과의 대적에서 승리하고 천 자를 비롯한 황실을 구하고 대명국대사마대원수가 되는 것이고, 심층적으로는 惡이 유입되어 혼돈 에 빠진 세계를 구하고 질서를 회복하는 것이다. 그런데 충렬이 소명을 ‘거부’한다. 물론 충렬이 거 부의 의사를 분명히 언표하지는 않는다. 다만, 소명을 인식하지 못하고 현실에 안주하면서 방기한 다. 이로 인해 충렬은 安住의 공간에서 추방당하고 그 주변인들도 고난을 겪는다. 예정된 시점이 되면 충렬은 소명을 ‘수용’하게 되고, 재생공간에 들어가 自己寂滅의 과정을 거쳐 영 웅의 모습을 회복한다. 이즈음 정한담은 악의 본성을 발현하고 천자는 절체절명의 위험에 빠진다. 충렬은 그제야 자신의 소명을 인식하고, 정한담과 대적하여 승리하고 천자를 구함으로써 소명을 ‘ 수행’한다. 이후 환상세계에서 현실세계로 귀환하고, 자신이 이룩한 질서와 세계의 완성을 현실세 계에 환원하고, 내부의 자신과 싸워 승리함으로써 戰士영웅에서 精神영웅이 된다. 이로써 소명은 ‘ 완성’된다. 이 과정에서 『유충렬전』에 나타난 ‘선악의 대립’, 그리고 선의 승리와 악의 패배를 통한 ‘권선징악 ’은 영웅소설의 한계성이 아니라, 선과 악에 대한 철학적 물음에 해답을 낸 것이라 볼 수 있다.
