This study is as to find an answer on fundamental questions of the architecture. As it were, it is as how philosophical thinking about the nature of things could be applied for architecture. Architecture is a realm dealing with the space. Moreover, the term of ‘Space’ is what implies a philosophical thinking in essence. These questions about the fundamental nature of the architecture is the background of this research. Based on these questions, Sartre's existential thoughts are selected as the method and scope of this study. By investigating philosophically on that every existing beings have consciousness, this study researches about Schultz’s existential theories of architecture, which argues that all space make an interaction and formed an organic relationship. In this regard, Jean Nouvel is a representative architect who expresses his originality by the epidermis. Thus, this study examines Jean Nouvel’s architectural features by applying such existential thoughts into his works, and finally, pursues a perception of Jean Nouvel’s unique works expressing co-interaction with their surroundings.

본 연구의 목적은 건축의 근원적 물음, 즉 사물의 본질에 관한 생각을 바탕으로 철학적 사유가 건축에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는가에 대한 것이다. 건축은 공간을 다루는 학문이다. 이미 공간이라는 단어는 그 어원부터 철학적 사고를 내포하고 있다. 이러한 건축의 근원적 본질에 대한 물음의 시작이 이 연구의 배경이다. 이러한 물음을 바탕으로 사르트르의 실존주의 철학을 선정하였다. 존재하는 모든 것은 의식을 가지고 있다는 철학적 고찰을 실시하고, 이를 건축에 적용시킨 슐츠의 실존주의적 건축이론을 고찰한다. 슐츠는 모든 공간이 상호작용하여 유기적 관계를 형성한다고 주장한다. 장 누벨은 프랑스를 대표하는 건축가로써 표피를 통해 독창성을 나타내는 건축가이다. 장 누벨의 철학과 건축특징을 살피고, 앞서 고찰한 실존주의 적용하여 작품을 선정, 분석한다. 작품 분석결과 장 누벨은 자신의 건축을 통해 주변과 상호작용함이 드러났다.
