The purpose of this study is to investigate the variety of naturopathic treatment of cancer patients, utilization of naturopathic treatment for each cancer type, awareness of the subjects in this study about effect of naturopathic treatment and its impact on the extension of survival period. The subjects were 780 patients out of cancer patients who were registered as a cancer patient in 2012 and were serviced at health centers in cities and regional areas nationwide and five housing and care centers for cancer treatment. The results were statistically analyzed using SPSS. First, 94.9% of the cancer patients of this study used naturopathic treatment. Types of naturopathic treatments are composed of 76% in exercise therapy and 61.8% in vegetarian dietary. Mind and body and psychological therapy used by each cancer type are in order of breast cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer with ratios of 53.9%, 50.7%, 45.2%, respectively. Dietary nutrition biological therapies were used by stomach cancer and colon cancer patients with ratios of 51.1% and 40.9% respectively. Second, the states of cancer of subjects in the research when found in early diagnosis were phase I (initial stage) stomach cancer 50.8%, other types 43.6%, and liver cancer 38.2%. Medium phase (Stage II) was breast cancer 54.2% and colon cancer 41%. And Final phase (Stage III) was lung cancer 40.5%. Types of cancer found in early diagnosis varied. Third, regarding the awareness of effect on the extension of period of survival, 58.2% of subjects of the research stated that naturopathic treatment was effective to extend the period of survival of cancer patients. Regarding awareness about efficacy and effect after use of naturopathic treatment, it showed that ‘release of stresses’ was the highest ratio with 30.5% and followed by ‘decrease of anxiety’ with 26.4%. Fourth, 10.9% of patients experienced side effects from naturopathic treatment, and only 0.9% has severe side effects. Life style that was changed in the course of cancer diagnosis and treatment were preference of vegetarianism with 49.6% and exercise therapy with 45.5%. So 94.9% of them experienced the change of life style. To conclude, it is important and necessary to study further on introduction naturopathic treatment and complementary and alternative medicine into treatment of cancer patients or apply it medical policy.

본 연구의 목적은 암 환자들이 많이 이용하는 자연치유요법의 종류와 암 종류별 자연치유요법의 이용실태를 바 탕으로, 자연치유요법의 효능 및 생존기간 연장에 대한 연구대상자의 인식도를 연구하는 것이었다. 본 연구를 위해 2012년을 기준으로 경기도 및 전남에 소재한 5개의 암 전문요양병원과 전국 각 시도 지역의 보건소에서 관리하는 암 환자 중, 동 조사연구의 취지에 동의한 총 780 명을 대상으로 설문조사하였다. 연구결과는 SPSS Window 12.0 version 을 이용하여 통계 처리하였다. 첫째, 연구대상 암 환자의 94.9%가 자연치유요법을 이용하였다. 자연치유요법의 종류 로는 운동요법이 76.0%, 채식주의가 61.8% 순 이었다. 암 종별 정신ㆍ신체ㆍ심리요법의 이용은 유방암, 폐암 및 간암 환자가 각각 53.9%, 50.7%, 45.2%순으로 이용하였다. 식이영양 생물학적 요법은 위암과 대장암 환자가 각각 51.1%, 40.9%가 이용하고 있었다. 둘째, 연구대상자들의 초진 시 발견된 암 진행 상태는 초기(I)가 위암이 50.8%, 기타 암이 43.6%, 간암이 38.2%이었다. 중기(II) 진행 상태는 유방암 54.2%, 대장암이 41%였고, 말기(III) 진행 상태는 폐암이 40.5%로 나타났다. 최초 진단 시에 발견된 암의 진행 상태는 암 종별로 다양하게 나타났다. 셋째, 연구대상자의 자연 치유요법이 암 환자의 생존기간 연장에 대한 인식도 조사에서 58.2%가 생존기간 연장에 도움이 되었다고 응답하였다. 자연치유요법 이용 후의 효능효과에 대한 인식도에서는 ‘스트레스 해소’가 30.5%로 높았고, 다음은 ‘불안감 감소’가 26.4%순으로 나타났다. 넷째, 자연치유요법의 부작용 경험은 10.9%로 나타났으며, 이중 0.9%만이 심한 부작용이 있 었던 것으로 나타났다. 암 진단 및 치료과정에서 달라진 생활습관은 채식주의 선호가 49.6%, 운동요법이 45.5% 등 94.9%가 생활태도의 변화가 있었다. 이상의 연구결과를 통해 대부분의 암 환자는 다양한 자연치유요법을 이용하였고 효과가 있었으며, 이용환자의 과반수가 생존기간 연장에 도움이 된다는 인식을 가지고 있었다는 점을 알 수 있다. 따 라서 자연치유요법과 보완대체의학을 체계적으로 관리하기 위해 암 환자의 치유에 활용하는 정책이나 연구를 하는 것 이 중요하다고 판단한다.
