In this paper, we briefly review that a bilinear pairing-based handover authentication scheme for wireless networks, which is recently proposed by He et al, is completely breakable and insecure, even an effortless, passive eavesdropper. We also point out that an improvement of the scheme published by the same authors is not only impractical to use in wireless settings, but also has another significant security weakness. To solve such problems we suggest an IBE-based authentication mechanism that supports a number of desirable security properties: resistance to impersonation attacks, resistance to key-compromise impersonation attacks, forward secrecy of session keys, and privacy protection. Our scheme has much better performance and security features than the improved PairHand version.
