With the economical data service delivery, the packet transport network (PTN) technologies such as multi-protocol label switching transport profile (MPLS-TP) have emerged as an important player in the next-generation transport networks. As the PTN continues to make such considerable progress, it is being challenged by network providers who need rapid and reliable recovery capabilities to guarantee the availability of their services. In this paper, we proposes a fault detection method for point-to-point paths configurable in a PTN. Using the software defined network (SDN) architecture enforcing network agility and automation, we decrease the fault detection time between client network devices, each of which is connected to a provider network device, up to tens of milliseconds. It enables the client network devices to perform their own recovery processes within sub-50 milliseconds, so as to contribute on reducing packet loss of customer traffic.
