The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behaviors and recognition of college students and any possible differences in those aspects according to their general characteristics in an attempt to provide some information on the oral health promotion of college students. The subjects in this study were 292 students who were selected by convenience sampling from colleges in Joenbuk. They included 186 male students and 106 female students. A self-administered survey was conducted to gather data. 1. As for oral health concern, the largest group of the college students(35.6%) replied they were a little concerned about oral health. Regarding oral health knowledge, the biggest group(69.2%) had an average level of oral health knowledge. As to self-rated oral health status, the greatest group(43.2%) found themselves to be in normal oral health. Concerning the importance of oral health, the largest group(70.2%) considered oral health to be important. 2. In regard to the relationship between general characteristics and limitation of activities caused by oral diseases, 41.8 percent answered they faced difficulties due to oral diseases, and 17.5 percent of those respondents replied their studies were affected by oral diseases. By gender and academic year, 50 percent of the female students and the largest group of the freshmen(47.3%) answered their daily lives were affected by oral diseases(p<0.05). In the case of the respondents whose studies were affected by oral diseases, the female students(22.6%) outnumbered the male students, and the rate of the freshmen(23.6%) was highest. There were statistically significant differences in that regard according to gender and academic year(p<0.05). 3. As to dental treatment experience over the last year, 58.2 percent of the college students didn't receive any dental treatment. By monthly mean allowances, the largest number of the respondents who received dental treatment over the last year got 510,000 thousand won or more for pocket money(70.0%), and the differences between them and the others were statistically significant(p<0.05). The most common reason that the respondents who needed to receive dental treatment over the last year actually didn't do it was time constraints(46.4%), followed by lack of concern(31.75%) and financial status (21.3%). 4. In terms of oral health education experience, 45.2 percent had ever received oral health education, and the female students(52.8%) had more experience to do that. As many as 72.3 percent of the smokers received no dental health education, and there were statistically significant differences in that aspect according to gender and smoking(p<0.05). There were differences among the college students in oral health awareness and behavior according to their general characteristics. Oral health education should be provided in consideration of their characteristics.
