Chitin is a polysaccharide formed from β-1,4-links of N-acetyl-Dglucosamin, which is widely distributed in fungi, crustaceans, mollusce, coelenterates, protozoan and green algae. More than 50 isolates showing the potential antifungal activity by chitinase production were screened from loess. Among them, two isolates exhibited strong antagonistic effect against the indicator fungi Fusarium oxysporum KACC 40031 and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum KACC 40457. The major isolates with antifungal activity were identified as Paenibacillus chinjuensis and P. elgii by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Chitinase was purified by 80% ammonium sulfate fractionation and chitin affinity chromatography, then antifungal spectrum was examined against phytopathogenic fungi.
