Effective disruption of cell wall is particularly important for maximizing the yield of product recovery from microorganisms. In this study, a novel approach for cost-effective cell disruption through the use of antimicrobial polymers containing amino groups (PDMAMS, polydimethylaminomethylstyrene) was investigated. For their use in cell disruption, PDMAMS polymers were immobilized onto commercial nylon membranes via iCVD (initiated chemical vapor deposition). The membrane fixed with PDMAMS was immersed in culture of Aurantiochytrium sp. KRS101 for up to 24 hours. The lipid released from disrupted cells was collected and quantified via gravimetric method in order to evaluate the efficiency of cell disruption. In conclusion, antimicrobial polymer treatment seems to be a promising method for cell disruption due to its effectiveness, low energy consumption, and reusability of the polymers.
