Many scholars see suicide as a societal issue not limited to individual sphere, and continue the effort to prevent it. Many countries including the United States, Japan, and Finland have adopted psychological autopsy in order to find out the substantial truth regarding the motive of suicide. In Korea, the importance of psychological autopsy has recently been recognized and some groups have adopted the technique under the assistance of the Health and Welfare Ministry. In the military, psychological autopsy is conducted with advice from private organizations when the bereaved family request psychological autopsy be performed, or when it is needed in terms of investigative procedure. This study focuses on young soldiers and considered ‘euphemism of the terminology psychological autopsy’, ‘establishment of an organization in charge for investigation’, ‘development of military psychological autopsy standardization tool’, and ‘psychological recovery system for the bereaved family and fellow soldiers’ as a method to effectively introduce psychological autopsy in the military. The paper also looks into the characteristics of suicides in the military, the psychological influence of suicide on the bereaved family and fellow soldiers, and the current conditions surrounding the research on psychological autopsy in and out of the country.

많은 학자들은 자살을 개인에게 국한되지 않고 사회문제로 보면서 자살을 예방하려는 노력을 계속하고 있다. 자살자의 자살원인에 대한 실체적 진실을 찾기 위하여 심리부검이라는 기법을 미국, 일본, 핀란드 등을 비롯한 많은 나라들이 실시해오고 있다. 우리나라도 심리부검의 중요성이 새삼 인식되어 보건복지부의 지원을 받아 일부 단체들이 실시하였으며, 군에서도 자살자들의 가족이 원하는 경우또는 수사상 필요한 경우에 한해 민간단체의 자문을 받아 심리부검을 실시하고 있다. 본 연구는 젊은병사를 대상으로 군자살의 특징, 유족 군동료들에 미치는 심리적 영향, 국내외 심리부검의 연구 실태등을 살펴보고 군에서의 효과적인 심리부검을 적용하는 방안으로 ‘심리부검 용어의 순화’, ‘조사를 위한 전담기구 설치’, ‘군 심리부검 표준화 도구 개발’, ‘유족 및 군 동료의 심리치유체계’ 등의 개선방안을 고찰하였다.
