Critically examining the gap between the current multicultural dance education and the multicultural characteristics of Korean society, this research argues for the shift of multicultural dance education toward a more socially-relevant and all-embracing direction. The multicultural dance education in Korea has been largely dependent on the folk dance repertoires, which inevitably rendered the dance view to be Europe-centered. This is because European countries actively collected and reformulated folk dance into repertoires for political purposes, which can naturally alienate Asian dance resources with its strong emphasis on dance-theatre forms. Observing that it is far from the Asian-centered multiculturalism in Korean society, this study suggests a new approach to multicultural dance education that emphasizes both the general and the particular of dance cultures. In other words, we not only need to diversify folk dance repertoires by accumulating pedagogical resources on Asian dance cultures, but also need to encourage both Korean students and students from multicultural families to equally participate in the multicultural dance education. While acknowledging the pedagogical values of teaching folk dances, this study also points out its possible drawbacks, such as cultural fundamentalism and extreme cultural relativism. Considering that folk dance repertoires tend to be political and even artificial in many modern societies, this presentation suggests a paradigm shift in multicultural dance education, which is more fundamental than just adding a few Asian folk dance repertoires in dance curriculum.
