In early April 2008, garlic leaves were sampled from 5 areas for virus detection. The detection of viruses such as OYDV (onion yellow dwarf virus), LYSV (leek yellow stripe virus), GLV (garlic latent virus) and GarVs was done using RT-PCR. The primers were synthesized to amplify the coat protein genes of these viruses (Sumi and Ayabe, 2001). OYDV and LYSV, the viruses which are known to greatly decrease the yield of garlic bulbs, infected 100% of the garlic in all five areas. GarVs was also observed in 100% of the garlic from all five areas. A portion of subjects did not show mosaic symptom that is visible to the naked eye, however, were infected with a virus. 100% of garlic from Haenam and Muan was infected, while 93.8% from Namhae, Goheung and Shinan were infected with GLV. GLV is a carlavirus that shows undetectable effects alone but causes critical damage when it co-infected with potyvirus.
