The purpose of this study is to develop a model that quantitatively estimates knowledge drain risks in Communities of Practice (CoPs). The potential risk of individual members of CoPs is examined by considering two possibilities: when members are network leaders and when members are isolated experts. The developed metric is validated through a case study with actual data from an online CoP. By measuring the knowledge drain risk of individuals in CoPs, this study provides an initial step for quantitatively estimating the risks associated with members of knowledge networks. Moreover, it offers guidelines for practitioners to reduce the negative influence of the departure of members on CoPs.
