In more recent years, globalisation brings more opportunities to work with speakers from different languages and cultural backgrounds to Koreans in workplaces. Also, a number of Koreans gradually go overseas to find their career opportunities. This implies that they should be able to communicate with people from a variety of countries in English. Without knowing the sociolinguistic knowledge and conventions they may experience miscommunication or misunderstandings. In that sense, this paper shows the different theory and strategies of politeness in speech acts as one of the factors of miscommunication Therefore, Korean learners of English will be able to use appropriate sociolinguistic forms in contexts by perceiving the differences between them.
