- The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, this study introduces a communication approach called ‘Theory of the Coordinated Management of Meaning’(CMM) developed by W. Barnett Pearce and Vernon E. Cronen. Second, this study applies CMM as a useful theory and an appropriate analytic tool for analyzing address forms. It has been revealed that CMM theory and its symbolic apparatus provide a useful means for analyzing address forms, especially for individual and dyadic addressing behaviors. CMM shows both how intrapersonally each person arranges contextual layers for an address choice and how interpersonally the addressor coordinates with his/her addressee. In addition, CMM is shown to be useful for delineating the changes of context layers which guide address behavior changes.
