The purpose of this paper is to find the role of social capital in the relationship between income satisfaction and life satisfaction. Using the data the Rural life index 2009 Survey conducted by Rural Development Administration (RDA), this article tests the potential role of social capital as an important mediator. The empirical results show that social capital plays a role as mediator of the relationship between income satisfaction and life satisfaction. However, the role of social capital is limited without improvement of social conditions of rural areas. From the results of this study, the authors conclude that government policy makers need a change of the perception not only in its existing perceptions of the value of social capital that has considered as a valuable asset in the agricultural society of traditional korea but also in the current Korea's agricultural policies under the pressure of globalization.

본 연구는 농촌사회에서의 소득 만족도와 삶의 만족도 관계에서 사회적 자본의 역할을 파악하고자 한다. 농촌진흥청이 2009년에 실시한 농촌생활지표 조사를 이용, 삶의 영역별 만족도 중 소득 만족도와 삶의 만족도 사이의 관계에서 사회적 자본을 매개변수로 설정한 모델을 검정하였다. 회귀분석을 이용한 실증분석결과, 소득 만족도와 삶의 만족도 관계에서 한국 농촌의 존립 기반인 사회적 자본은 그 가치가 여전히 존속하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 농촌생활환경의 근본적인 향상 없이는 그 역할은 제한될 수밖에 없을 것이다. 본 연구 결과는 FTA 등 시장개방의 위기 속에서 한국농촌사회가 전통적인 자산으로 인식되어져 온 협동과 같은 사회적 자본의 확충과 유지가 매우 중요함을 보여주고 있어 농촌정책 수립에서 새로운 인식 변화가 필요함을 보여주고 있다.
