This study is a part of successive analyses of ancient district of Seoul to understand the construction types of architectural space according to the characters of urban structure. Based on the Muratorian school’s typo-morphological method, the study carried out the process of the transition of urban structure and the development of Namdae_Mun market district by reference review including old maps, the analysis of present conditions of the site by field survey. The study inspect closely how to respond the building to urban structure by 3-D analytic method by means of diverse photos and sections. The conclusion of the study summarized as follows. The buildings are generally located along to the road at close and the outer part of the buildings communicate directly with the road and inpour the road. The boundary of the buildings are disintegrated and the inner spaces makes 2 dimensional expansion. These phenomena come from the programmatic characters of market place. These urban-architectural characters result from direct communication between building and road, and the needs of the large floor area, which is essential to make big commercial district according to grouping the similar commercial types.

본 연구는 서울 사대문 안의 도시구조 특성과 이에 따른 건축공간의 구성유형을 살펴보기 위한 과정의 한 부분으로 진행되었다. 무라토리안 학파의 연구방법론을 기본으로 하여, 고지도와 문헌연구를 통한 도시조직의 변화와 남대문시장의 형성과정에 대한 조사를 실시하며, 현황조사를 위한 현장답사를 병행하여 진행하였다. 또한, 각종 사진과 단면 등의 자료 수집을 통한 입체적인 분석으로 도시 조직에 건축물이 어떻게 반응하는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 통한 결론은 다음과 같다. 남대문시장의 건물은 가로에 인접하여 형성되는 것이 일반적이며, 건물의 외곽 부는 가로와 ‘직접소통’하며 적극적으로 가로를 실내로 유입한다. 주변 건물들의 경계는 해체되며, 내부공간은 다양한 방법으로 ‘면적확장’을 이루는 공통된 성향을 발견할 수 있었다. 이는 연구대상지역이 시장이라는 건축 프로그램적 특성, 즉 가로와 상업시설 간의 적극적인 소통과 유사 업종간의 군집에 따른 거대 상권형성을 위한 바닥면적 확보의 필요성에 기인하는 것으로 판단된다.
