This paper examines the meaning of the ornament which is reflected in the architecture of Gottfried Semper’s architectural theory. The various phenomenons in contemporary architecture shows that the architectural interests focus on the surface of architecture and it appears change of the materials and development of technology. It arouses lots of interests about new tendency and concepts of ornaments in architecture. Semper defines the architecture as surface-art and he understands the origin of architecture is based on the concept of space. Architecture is understood as a object revealing a space and method restricting a space, not as structure. In this pont, the wall can be recognized as architectural expression of the values of the times and as the method to materialize the restricted spaces. This paper examines that the ornament is the essential elements in architecture, not subsidiary, in the meaning of that the surface, for Semper, is the artistic methode to dematerialize of the form, in which structural elements and ornaments can't be distinct from each other. In conclusion, this paper is an attempt to interpret Semper's thoughts on ornament intended through the architectural theory of Semper.

본 논문의 목적은 Gottfried Semper의 건축에서 드러나는 장식의 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 현대 건축에서 나타나고 있는 외피의 다양한 현상은 건축적 관심사가 건축표면에 집중되고 있으며 외피는 재료의 변화 및 기술 발전의 중요한 표현적 대상이 되고 있음을 보여준다. 이는 건축에서 새로운 장식적 경향에 대한 관심과 장식 개념에 대한 새로운 고찰을 불러일으키고 있다. 젬퍼는 건축을 피복예술로 정의하며 건축의 기원을 공간개념에 근원을 두는 형태원리로 이해하고 있다. 젬퍼에게 있어 건축은 구조의 문제가 아닌 공간을 한정하는 방법과 대상의 드러냄의 문제로 해석할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 벽은 한정된 공간을 현실화 시키는 것으로, 시대적 가치를 전달하는 건축적 표현으로 인식되고 있다. 젬퍼에게 있어 피복이란 형태를 구조적인 것과 장식적인 것을 구분할 수 없을 때까지 비물질화하는 예술수단이라는 점에서 장식은 건축에 있어 부수적인 것이 아니라 필연적인 요소로 인식되고 있음을 본 연구에서 추적하고자 한다.
