The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of domestic violence in Korean American community. Research questions are 1) which factors place main roles to onset of domestic violence in Korean American community? 2) Are there any prevalent types of domestic violence in immigrant community? To identify critical factors, we analyzed cases who received victims' assistance intervention programs. 48 domestic violence victims' case records were analyzed and categorized systematically by content analysis and qualitative methods. The victims sought help, participated in intake interviews and received victims' assistance services anytime between years 2005 to 2006 through local ethnic community center. The result of this study shows that are: interaction of language proficiency, cultural adjustment, and secured immigrant status is considered as strong foundation to gianl power to live as immigrants, while for the abusers utilized as weapons to control and to exploit the victims. And also male dominance is also addressed as a main role for domestic violence in Korean American. Through comparative analysis, three major types of domestic violence are categorized; ‘patriarchal traditional couples’, ‘young married couples with imbalanced power’. ‘hasty remarried couples’ can be identified in accordance with place of marriage and marital status. This study suggests a in-depth understanding of risk factors and types of Korean American victims of domestic violence. It further suggests that practical and sensitive helping strategies reflecting unique conditions of Asian victims in various immigrant communities are needed based on the different types and characteristics of each group. The study helps to create prevention and intervention applicable to risk groups in order to end domestic violence.

본 연구의 목적은 미국의 한인가정에서 일어나는 가정폭력의 특징과 유형을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 연구 질문으로 첫째, 미국 이민가족의 한인여성들이 경험하는 가정폭력에는 어떠한 특징들이 존재하는가? 둘째, 이민자로서의 미국 내 한인여성들이 경험하는 가정폭력에는 유형들이 존재하고 있는가? 있다면 각 유형들은 어떤 공통점 및 차이점을 나타내고 있는가 하는 점이다. 이러한 연구주제를 파악하기 위해서 미국 동부지역의 가정폭력 관련 서비스를 시행하고 있는 기관에서 가정폭력문제로 도움을 청했던 한인 여성의 48개 사례에 대하여 내용분석과 질적 사례분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과 언어, 문화, 그리고 이민 지위는 아내 학대와 폭력에 있어서 권력불균형을 이루는데 주요 요인이 되고 있었다. 이민 여성들에게 있어서 영어의 유창성 정도, 문화적 적응 정도, 그리고 영주권과 시민권 등의 이민지위를 획득하는 것은 이민자로서의 삶에 힘을 더하는 매우 중요한 기초가 되는 반면, 가해자들에게는 피해자들을 통제하기 위한 한 권력통제수단으로 사용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 결혼의 장소와 결혼 상태를 두 축으로 사례를 분류한 결과 미국 내 한인 여성들이 경험하는 가정폭력 사례들은 한국에서 결혼하여 미국으로 이주한 경우와 미국에서 배우자를 만나 결혼 한 경우에 그 특징이나 폭력 양상에 뚜렷한 경향성이 보여 졌으며, 미국에서 결혼한 경우의 초혼과 재혼을 다시 나누어 총 세 가지 유형으로 분류되고 있음을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 탐색적인 연구로서 미국의 한인 여성들이 경험하는 가정폭력의 주요 특징에 따라 가정폭력 부부들의 사례를 유형화 해봄으로써 가정폭력 예방을 위한 고위험 집단을 파악하고, 예방활동을 할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제시하는데 의의가 있으며, 갈수록 증가하는 이민가족들의 가정폭력 문제에 개입하는데 있어 실천적 함의를 제공하여 주고 있다.
