The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the characteristic features shown by Korean newspapers in reporting sexual violences. This study, as its research subjects, selected , , and which released 638 articles to report sexual violences from January 1st, 2009 to December 31st. All of the articles were subjected to the quantitative analyses. The analyses showed the following results. First, the newspaper reports were very superficial in dealing with sexual violences. They were likely to take the form of straight articles, either providing a simple information, or accusing and charging the sexual violence. The content of the article showed the tendency of focusing the current status and the overall tend, as well as the details of the case. Meanwhile, the intent of the article showed the inclination of accusing the sexual violence and providing the relevant information, rather than raising the related critical issues. Second, newspaper reports showed a conservative orientation in terms of their approach. Most of them were filled with straight articles which could not carry any opinion or suggestion. Third, although all of 3 companies took the superficial stance, they were visibly different in terms of the preferred type of reports. Compared to others, , known as a liberal newspaper, released more issue-raising articles and policy-suggesting articles. Especially, it dealt with human right issues of the victims, even though the frequencies were not high. In contrast, and were saturated with neutral articles. They released more articles either providing the information of the case or reporting its details.

본 연구의 목적은 성폭력 관련 한국 신문보도의 특성을 실증적으로 분석하는데 있다. 본 연구는 2009년 <동아일보>, <한겨레신문>, <문화일보>에 보도된 총 683건의 기사를 분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 성폭력 관련 신문보도는 단순히 정보를 제공하거나 사건, 사고를 고발하는 스트레이트 기사였으며, 특정 기관에서 제공하는 관급기사들을 그대로 전달하는 형태를 띠고 있어 피상적인 형태를 보여주었다. 둘째, 성폭력 관련 신문보도는 성폭력의 문제를 사회구조적 접근, 즉 왜곡된 우리 성문화나 법･제도의 미비점 등을 해결책으로 제시하기 보다는 주로 현황이나 실태를 보도하거나 아무런 해결책을 제시하지 않고 단순히 사건을 나열하는 수준에 그치고 있었다. 셋째, 신문사별 차이에 있어 한겨레가 다른 신문에 비해 문제제기 형태의 보도, 성폭력 정책관련 기사, 피해자 인권관련 기사를 더 많이 다루고 있어 피상적인 보도성향을 지양하고 것으로 나타났다. 또한 미미하긴 하지만 한겨례가 법과 제도를 부각시키는 기사를 상대적으로 더 보도하였다.
