The purpose of this study is to suggest architectural planning directions for improving book surveillance function at public library general collection rooms. Visibility analysis of cognitive environment appeared on general collection rooms in Daegu city's nine public libraries clarified planning problems from the perspective of theft protection. This study proposed the following to improve the found: (1) Adjust librarians' work locations for enabling visual control and surveillance to overall collection spaces. (2) Consider appropriate decentralized arrangements of reading tables for natural surveillance between users. (3) Decentralize librarians' spaces and even avoid their concentration after the decentralization. (4) Plan space layouts and partition materials for supporting natural surveillance from common spaces to general collection rooms. (5) Locate books vulnerable to theft at visually controlled areas.
