This study was started to consider how authoritative hierarchy in Choson Dynasty influenced placement and composition of Town-walls space and how it was expressed in forms. As the methodology for analysis, we have looked into landscape images, road system and exposure and relationship of axis and symmetry. Then, we have applied analyzed tools to main Eupseong (fortress) spaces in Choson Dynasty, especially focused on the Naju-Eupseong. Regional Eupseong in Choson Dynasty had justification to show the authority of governing class in symbolic landscapes. As special hierarchy expression method for Eupseong spaces in Korea, we can say following things: First, they visualized 3-step structure of "sky-mountain-authority buildings" in landscape. Second, for road system, they tried to protect authority buildings in visual ways. Third, they have placed the building for the most high authority facing south as a salutation to the authority. Fourth, for structures of government office spaces in Eupseong, they set hierarchy by dividing areas according to axis and symmetry. We have found out that by using these methods, governors in Choson Dynasty made spatial unit, so that the oppressed can accept authority of the Emperor naturally.

본 논문은 조선시대 권위적 위계가 어떻게 읍성공간의 배치구성에 영향을 미쳤고, 어떠한 형태로 표현되었는지 고찰해보고자 시도되었다. 분석을 위한 방법으로 경관적 이미지, 도로체계 및 좌향, 축과 대칭의 관계를 살펴보았으며, 이러한 분석도구들을 나주읍성을 중심으로 조선시대 주요 읍성공간에 적용시켜 보았다. 조선시대 지방읍성은 지배계급의 권위를 상징적 경관으로 드러내야 할 당위성을 가지고 있었다. 우리나라 읍성공간의 특수한 위계 표현방법으로는 첫째, ‘하늘-산-권위건물’ 3단계 구조의 경관적 이미지를 시각화하였다. 둘째, 도로체계를 구성하는 데 있어서 권위건물을 시각적으로 보호하고자 하였다. 셋째, 최고위계 건물을 남향으로 배치하여 지배자에게 배례하도록 하였다. 넷째, 읍성 내 관아공간의 구성에 있어서 축과 대칭을 통한 영역설정으로 위계를 설정하였다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이러한 방법을 사용하여 조선시대의 지배자들은 피지배층에게 왕의 권위를 당연하게 받아들이도록 하는 공간적 장치를 만들었음을 알게 되었다.
