This study is based on investigating the foundation background and process, and the development process of the intellectually disabled chior which helpde improve the quality of life of the disabled and affected the culture welfare and the the improvement of awareness by optimistic means. The first data was interview and photos of the intellectually disabled chior and the second data was from newspapers, journals and related books. The foundation background of the intellectually disabled choir was to improve the awareness of the intellectually disabled, rather than to meet the needs of the times. It was started by the voluntary participation of the director of Seoul Community Welfare Center for the Intellectually Disabled and the special teachers. This made an opportunity for other choirs to be established. Furthermore, the change or socialcircumstances progressively affected the recognition of the disabled and this also lead to the choir's quantitative improvement. Nowadas, performing arts has become more various than before and the interest has expanded to the qualitative aspects. Through the historical consideration of the intellectually disabled chior, the practical requirements needed for intellectually disabled was suggested in the conclusion.

이 연구는 장애인의 삶의 질을 향상시키고 문화복지와 인식개선을 위해 노력한 지적장애인 합창단의 설립배경 및 과정과 인식개선의 발달과정을 알아보고자 한 것이다. 연구는 일차적 자료인 지적장애인 합창단 관련자 면담과 사진, 이차적 자료인 신문, 잡지, 관련 서적 등의 자료수집을 통해 이루어졌다. 지적장애인 합창단 초기의 설립배경은 시대적 요구이기 보다는 지적 장애인들의 인식개선 사업을 위해 서울지적장애인 복지관 관장과 특수교사의 자발적인 참여로 시작되었으며 이것은 다른 합창단이 설립할 수 있도록 계기를 마련해 주었다. 그리고 사회적 상황의 변화는 장애인에 대한 인식의 개선에 점차적으로 영향을 주었고 이는 또한 합창단의 양적 발전으로 이어질 수 있었다. 현재의 합창 예술공연은 한층 다양해졌으며 질적인 측면에까지 관심의 영역은 확장되었다. 결론에서 지적 장애인 합창단의 역사적 고찰을 통해 지적 장애인들에게 필요한 실제적인 요건이 무엇인지를 제안하였다.
