Various houses, dormitories and operating rooms were built to give medical treatments and nurse the lepers at Sorok Island during the Japanese Ruling Era.
Buildings on the wide land were used to isolate and observe the lepers, since the lepers needed their own colony apart from society, in order to prevent spread of the contagious disease. There had been two stages during the construction Process epoch, the houses in the initial stage are like Jahaewon which is a patients living house. The completed structures were built as framed
Japanese wooden structures, with wood siding on outside walls and with mud-plastered walls inside.
In the second stage, most of the houses were built as simple masonry structures with bricks since brick factories had started in 1933 and continued until Korea was liberated from Japan. The buildings were not only furnished with the wooden trusses but also used Japanese roofing tile made of cement. Practicality also took priority over embellishments in appearance.
