[INTRODUCTION] The Seoul Olympics has been an international role model for a nation who intends to host such a mega event considering the fact that it significantly influenced on the advancement of national identity and on the develop-ment of Korean modern society. [METHOD] This study evaluates political, economical, social and cultural significance of the Seoul Olympics investigating media and academic sources before, during and after the Games. [RESULT] The Seoul Olympics can be certainly regarded as one of the most successful victory for both Korea and the Olympic Movement pro-moting world peace and harmony through the diligent partnership of the SLOOC and the IOC. The Seoul Olympics con-tributed to the promotion of the diplomatic relations of Korea with other nations including communist and non-aligned nations. It has contributed to the peace between two Koreas additionally. Recognition of global relationship for both Korea and the globe through physical culture has been witnessed by the Seoul Olympics. Sport was a strong political tool to ameliorate national diplomacy. [CONCLUSION] The Seoul Olympics was successful achievement to promote a form of globalization. The 2008 Beijing Olympics also has been regarded as a harbinger of the changing nature of political relation-ships in the East Asian region and the globe as experienced through the Seoul Games.

[서론] 서울 올림픽과 같은 메가 이벤트는 국가 정체성의 발전과 한국 현대 사회의 발전에 크게 영향을 주었으며 서울 올림픽은 세계 여러 나라에 하나의 성공적인 모델이 되어왔다. [방법] 본 연구는 서울 올림픽 전, 중, 개최 이후의 언론과 학계의 선행연구를 고찰하여 서울올림픽에 대한 경제적, 사회적, 정치적, 문화적 의미를 재평가 해 보고자 시도되었다. [결과] 서울 올림픽은 SLOOC(서울 올림픽 조직 위원회)와 IOC의 긴밀한 파트너십을 통해 세계 평화와 화합을 도모하여 한국사회의 근대화와 함께 올림픽 운동을 성공적으로 전파한 성공사례로 볼 수 있다. [결론] 서울 올림픽은 또한 공산주의와 비공산국을 포함한 다른 국가와 한국의 외교 관계를 증진하는데 기여했다. 그것은 또한 남북한 간의 평화에 기여했다고 볼 수 있으며 운동문화를 통한 글로벌리즘이 서울 올림픽을 통해 실현되었다. 스포츠는 결국 국가 간의 외교를 개선시키는 강력한 정치적인 도구가 되었다. 2008 베이징 올림픽도 역시 서울 올림픽을 통해 목격된 것처럼 동아시아 지역과 세계의 정치적인 관계의 환경을 변화시키는 선구적 역할을 하였다고 본다.
