Modern buildings should be preserved and restored because they show various kinds of modern materials, structures and forms, and even reflect the passage of time. They also reproduce sociocultural situation of the day. Moreover, the modern architecture makes connection between the past and the present time, thereby serving as good educational methods. Accordingly, it is one of the most important tasks to preserve and restore them. In this respect, this study reorganizes the specific meaning of the restoration and preservation. Modern design techniques are also examined on the basis of such meaning. Restoration is implemented in three aspects: meaning, context and image. This study is aimed at newly pigeonholing existing methods to preserve and restore modern buildings in Korea and suggesting new direction by examining examples of more advanced ones in Japan.
