Most of architectural firms use computer techniques as everyday tools of design tasks as well as for general office works. Since there have been little efforts at understanding the actual situation, however, it is rather unexpectable to foresee any possible problems and suggest a strategy for the development of architectural design practice in terms of information technology(IT) in near future. This study is based on the surveys conducted on the use of computing technology by architectural firms in Daejeon, which has been done for 4 times bi-annually from 1999 to this year as foundational efforts for resolving the above problem.
The results show that the architectural firms in Daejeon generally bear rather passive attitudes to computing technology and their actual use of IT resides at the basic and non-professional level of general office works and CAD as drafting and presentation tools at the most. In this sense, this study would provide a useful basis for the suggestion of a strategy for enhancing the practical competitiveness of architectural firms with computing technology. It should also be noted that further research is required to dynamically analyse the results of more and broader surveys and develop a concrete strategy as such.
