The Influences of Self-Discrepancy and Social Anxiety on Academic Adjustment in University Students

한국어: 선행 연구들은 대학생의 학업적응을 이해하는데 있어 자기개념 또는 자기 불일치와 사회불안이 유용한 변인이라는 점을 시사한다. 하지만, 이 세 가지 변인들 간의 관계를 통합적으로 살펴본 연구는 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이 세 변인들 간의 관계를 통합적으로 알아보기 위하여, 선행 연구의 결과들을 토대로, 자기 불일치가 사회불안을 부분 매개로 하여 학업적응에 영향을 미친다고 가정하는 부분매개모형을 상정하였다. 지방소재 대학교에 재학중인 389명으로부터 수집한 자료에 대해 구조방정식모형을 사용하여, 부분매개모형 및 두 대안 모형인 완전매개모형과 단순효과모형의 적합도를 평가하였다. 그 결과, 본 연구에서 상정한 부분매개모형은 수집된 자료에 적합하였으며, 두 대안모형들에 비해 우수한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 따라서 본 연구결과는 자기 불일치가 학업적응에 직접 영향을 줄 뿐 아니라 사회불안을 매개로 하여 간접적으로도 영향을 미침을 시사한다. 끝으로, 본 연구의 의의와 제한점에
관해 논의하였다.

영어: Previous studies suggest that self-concept or self-discrepancy and social anxiety are useful in
understanding academic adjustment of university students. However, there were few studies
investigating the relations between the factors integrally. Based on the previous studies, we
proposed a partial mediation model as an integrated model. The model hypothesized that
self-discrepancy would predict academic adjustment through partial mediation of social
anxiety. Using structural equation modeling(SEM), we evaluated the partial mediation model
as well as full mediation model and simple effects model as two alternative models from a
sample of 389 university students. SEM revealed that the partial mediation model fitted the
data adequately and was superior to the two alternative models. These findings indicate
that self-discrepancy predicts academic adjustment directly as well as indirectly, through
mediation of social anxiety. Finally, the implications and the limitations of the present study were discussed.
