The purpose of this study is to clarify the process of formation of modern cathedral architecture in Busan diocese.
The modern cathedral architecture of Busan diocese shows the propensity in which the architectural style is generally decided by social and economic situation. Especially, the cathedral architecture imitating Gothic was adopted in 1920s’ owing to propagation of brick which was produced in large quantity. However, the cathedral architecture changed to Japanese wooden structure at the end of colonial period when the colonial economy changed to wartime system. Thus, the modern cathedral architecture of Busan diocese was selected by social-economic situation rather than by religious aspect.
