본 연구는 2015–2022년 기업–연도 패널자료를 활용하여 기업의 연구개발(R&D) 투자 결정요인을 실증 분석하였다. 85,114개 기업, 295,814개 관측치를 대상으로 산업 및 연도 고정효과를 포함한 고정효과 패널모형을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 연구개발 투자는 기업이 처한 구조적 조건의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 기업규모는 유의한 요인으로, 대기업 대비 중견·중소기업의 투자 수준이 낮았으며 중소기업에서 격차가 크게 나타났다. 수도권 소재 기업은 비수도권 대비 연구개발 투자 수준이 높아 혁신 인프라의 공간적 집적 효과가 확인되었다. 기술역량(특허 보유)은 가장 강건한 영향요인으로, 특허 보유 기업의 연구개발 투자가 현저히 높았다. 재무 특성에서는 자산과 매출이 투자 확대와, 이자비용이 투자 제약과 관련되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 연구개발 투자가 기업 규모 구조, 지역 환경, 기술 축적, 재무 여건이 결합된 구조적 현상임을 제시하며, 기업 혁신전략 및 중소기업·지역 혁신정책 설계에 실증적 근거를 제공한다.

This study empirically investigates the determinants of firms’ research and development (R&D) investment using firm–year panel data from 2015 to 2022. The final sample consists of 85,114 firms and 295,814 observations. A fixed-effects panel model incorporating industry and year effects is employed. The results indicate that R&D investment is shaped by firms’ structural conditions. Firm size shows a significant effect, with medium-sized and small firms investing less in R&D than large firms, and the gap being more pronounced for small firms. Firms located in the metropolitan area exhibit higher R&D investment, suggesting the role of spatial agglomeration of innovation infrastructure. Technological capability, proxied by patent ownership, emerges as the most robust determinant, with patent-holding firms showing substantially higher R&D investment. Financial characteristics also matter: assets and sales are positively associated with R&D, whereas interest expenses constrain investment. These findings suggest that R&D investment is a structural outcome driven by firm size, regional environment, technological accumulation, and financial conditions, providing empirical implications for corporate innovation strategy and policies targeting SMEs and regional innovation.
