본 연구는 마태복음 27장에 기록된 본디오 빌라도 재판 장면을 중심으로, 그 안에 드러나는 군중의 반응과 상징체계를 군중심리와 집단무의식의 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 기독(목회)상담학적으로 해석하여 상담적 개입의 기초를 마련하고자 하는 목적에서 출발하였다. 이를 위해 구스타브 르 봉(Gustave Le Bon)이 제시한 군중심리의 핵심 구조인 ‘확언-반복-전염’의 작동 방식과 칼 융(C. G. Jung)의 집단무의식 및 원형 개념을 연결하여, 군중 속에서 형성되는 정서적 동일시와 상징적 반응의 과정을 고찰하였다. 특히 본문을 일곱 개의 장면으로 구분하여 내러티브의 흐름을 세밀하게 추적하고, 그 안에서 반복적으로 부각되는 ‘왕’, ‘죄수’, ‘십자가’, ‘피’와 같은 상징들을 중심으로 분석한 결과, 군중심리는 단순히 비이성적이고 충동적인 집단 행동으로 환원될 수 없으며, 오히려 집단무의식 속에 잠재된 원형적 상징과 정서가 특정 역사적·종교적 상황 속에서 표면화되는 과정임을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 ‘피’의 상징은 단지 폭력과 책임 전가의 표지가 아니라 군중 내부의 연대와 합일, 그리고 운명 공동체적 결속의 가능성을 드러내는 양가적 상징으로 이해될 수 있으며, 이는 예수의 십자가 사건과 연결되면서 더욱 심층적인 신학적 의미를 획득한다. 이러한 해석은 도나 오렌지(Donna M. Orange)의 관점과도 연결되는데, 군중심리는 위기와 파괴의 토대가 될 수 있는 동시에, 적절한 공감과 지지, 함께 견디어 내는 관계적 개입을 통해 회복의 자원으로 전환될 수 있음을 시사한다. 따라서 기독(목회)상담자와 목회자는 군중을 단순히 비판하거나 통제의 대상으로 보지 않고, 함께 겪어내고 살아내는 존재로서 그 내면의 고통과 불안을 환대하고 수용해야 한다. 나아가 디지털 시대의 온라인 군중 현상 역시 동일한 구조를 반복하고 있으며, 해시태그 운동, 댓글 여론, 가짜뉴스, 혐오 문화의 확산 등은 빌라도 재판 장면의 집단적 정동과 유사한 양상을 드러낸다. 그러므로 기독(목회)상담은 군중심리의 작동을 민감하게 식별하고, 이를 예방적이며 회복적으로 다루기 위한 실천 전략을 마련해야 하며, 본 연구는 군중심리와 집단무의식에 대한 신학적 성찰이 교회와 상담 현장의 갈등과 분열을 화해와 회복의 기회로 전환하는 실천적 자원이 될 수 있음을 제안한다.

This study aims to provide a pastoral counseling interpretation of crowd psychology and the structure of the collective unconscious in Matthew 27, focusing on the trial of Pontius Pilate, as a foundation for counseling intervention. For this purpose, Gustave Le Bon’s structure of crowd psychology—“assertion, repetition, and contagion”—was integrated with Carl Gustav Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious to analyze the emotions and symbols manifested within the crowd. The trial narrative was divided into seven scenes, and symbols such as “king,” “prisoner,” “cross,” and “blood” were examined in depth. The analysis revealed that crowd behavior is not merely irrational but reflects archetypal symbols of the collective unconscious. In particular, the symbol of “blood” signifies the possibility of solidarity and unity, serving as a symbolic link to the crucifixion of Jesus. Furthermore, following the insights of scholars such as Donna M. Orange, the study highlights that crowd psychology, while a potential source of crisis, can also become a resource for pastoral intervention through support and containment. Contemporary digital phenomena such as hashtag movements, online comments, fake news, and the spread of hate culture repeat the same structural dynamics and resemble the narrative of Pilate’s trial. Therefore, pastoral counseling must remain attentive to these dynamics and develop preventive and restorative strategies. Ultimately, theological reflection on crowd psychology and the collective unconscious can serve as a practical resource for transforming conflict and division within church and counseling contexts into opportunities for reconciliation and healing.
