21세기 한국사회는 “무연사회”라는 별칭이 등장할 정도로 다른 사람들과의 깊은 관계없이 형식적 관계 속에 소외된 삶을 살아가는 사람들이 증가하는 사회가 되었다. 4차 산업혁명이 제공하는 문명의 이기로 우리 사회 구성원들은 한편으로는 AI의 도움으로 편리한 삶을 살지만 다른 한편으로는 마음을 열고 만나는 깊은 대면 문화를 갈망하고 있다. 이러한 시대적 도전에 맞서 한국교회가 종교기관으로서 위기의 한국사회를 위해 실천할 수 있는 영성적 소그룹 모델을 고민하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 연구 방법으로 개신교 역사에서 소그룹 사역의 한 모델이 되었던 존 웨슬리의 소그룹 사역을 먼저 살펴 보았다. 웨슬리는 반회(Band), 속회(Class), 선발신도회(Select society), 그리고 참회 신도회(Penitent society)라는 소그룹 모임을 통해 개인적인 성화와 사회적 성화를 이루어 가는 영성훈련을 성공적으로 실천하였다. 이 가운데 알콜 중독등 영적인 삶에 낙오된 사람들의 모임이었던 참회 신도회를 제외한 세 개의 소그룹 사역의 운영 방법들을 참고로 21세기의 한국교회를 영성적 소그룹 사역을 제안하였다. 구체적으로 속회의 구성, 속회 운영 방안, 그리고 속회 인도자 훈련을 중심으로 고찰하였는데 주요 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 속회의 구성은 반회의 모임처럼 동질 그룹으로 편성하면 좋을 것 같다. 비혼 문화가 삶을 위한 하나의 선택이 되고, 이혼율이 증가하는 현실에서 누구나 마음의 부담 없이 참석하여 편하게 나누려면 심리적 동질감이 중요하기 때문이다. 그래서 비슷한 연령대, 같은 성별, 그리고 기혼자와 홀로 사는 신자로 구분하여 속회를 편성할 수 있을 것이다. 둘째, 속회 운영 방안은 속회 모임에서 나눈 이야기들에 대한 비밀을 유지하기, 마음을 여는 찬양과 기도, 말씀 묵상과 나눔, 영적 성장을 위한 중보기도, 그리고 야외에서 진행하는 창조물 묵상기도와 영적 친교 등으로 제안해 보았다. 셋째, 속회 인도자 훈련으로 영적 인도자 보다는 “분위기를 이끄는 자(Facilitator)”로서의 역할을 하게 하여 인도자의 지나친 부담을 덜어 주는 것, 목회자의 속회 인도자 교육과 속회 인도자들에 대한 그룹 또는 개별 영성지도, 그리고 속회 인도자들의 속회 인도에 대한 목회자의 수퍼 비전을 제안하였다. 이것을 교회마다 필요하면 적절하게 보완하여 실천할 수 있을 것이다.

The term "Disconnected Society" has emerged in 21st-century Korea to describe an increasing population living alienated lives within formal relationships, lacking deep connections with others. While the technological benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and AI provide convenience, members of society simultaneously long for a deep, face-to-face culture where they can truly open their hearts. Faced with this generational challenge, the purpose of this study is to explore a spiritual small-group model that the Korean church, as a religious institution, can implement to serve a society in crisis. As a research methodology, this study first examines the small-group ministry of John Wesley, which served as a foundational model in Protestant history. Wesley successfully practiced spiritual discipline to achieve both personal and social sanctification through various small groups: Bands, Classes, Select Societies, and Penitent Societies. Excluding the Penitent Society—which was specifically for those who had struggled in their spiritual lives, such as those with alcohol addiction—this study proposes a spiritual small-group ministry for the 21st-century Korean church based on the operational methods of the other three models. Specifically, the study focuses on the composition, operation, and leader training of the "Class", with the following key proposals: First: composition based on homogeneity. It is recommended that classes be organized into homogeneous groups, similar to the "Band" model. In a reality where "non-marriage" is a lifestyle choice and divorce rates are rising, psychological homogeneity is crucial for participants to share comfortably without burden. Therefore, classes can be organized by similar age groups, same gender, and a distinction between married members and those living alone. Second: operational strategies. The study suggests maintaining strict confidentiality regarding shared stories, using worship and prayer to open hearts, engaging in Word meditation and sharing, and practicing intercessory prayer for spiritual growth. Additionally, it proposes outdoor activities such as "creation meditation" and spiritual fellowship. Third: leader training as facilitators. To reduce the excessive burden on leaders, they should be trained as "facilitators" who guide the atmosphere rather than spiritual directors. This includes pastoral education for leaders, group or individual spiritual direction for leaders, and pastoral supervision regarding their leadership of the classes. These models can be appropriately adapted and supplemented by individual churches according to their specific needs.
