이 논문은 다양한 개념으로 논의되고 있는 종교 중독 현상을 문헌 연구를 통해 분석하고, 이를 토대로 한국 사회의 영성 구조 속에서 필요한 목회적 돌봄의 방향을 탐색하고자 한다. 교회는 역사적으로 성도들의 영적 성장과 신앙 공동체 형성에 중요한 역할을 담당해왔다. 그러나 이러한 공헌에도 불구하고 일부 성도들은 하나님을 사랑과 은혜로 경험하기보다 두려움, 공포, 수치심으로 경험하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 단순한 신앙의 미성숙으로 보기보다 개인의 심리적 취약성과 가족 및 종교 공동체의 구조적 문제 속에서 이해될 필요가 있다. 이에 이 논문은 종교 중독에 관한 주요 선행연구를 비판적으로 검토하여 그 개념적 범위와 공통된 특성을 도출하고자 하였다. 특히 종교 중독이 하나님과의 관계를 어떻게 왜곡하며, 신앙을 통제와 공포의 구조로 전환시키는지를 집중적으로 분석하였다. 이 논문은 종교 중독은 단순히 개인적인 문제로 분석되기보다는 가족이나 신앙 공동체에서 발생하고 형성될 수 있는 구조적인 부분을 강조했다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 논문은 종교 중독의 예방과 회복에 있어 하나님과의 친밀한 내면적 영적 성장이 핵심적인 요소임을 제안한다. 이를 위해 도널드 위니캇의 ‘안아주는 환경(holding environment)’ 개념을 적용하여, 신앙을 통해 성도들의 내면적 성장을 촉진하는 목회 돌봄의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이러한 안아주는 환경을 통해 안아주는 신앙 형성이 가능하며 이를 통해 교리적 종교 경험을 넘어 관계적인 영적 경험이 형성될 수 있다. 구체적으로 첫째, 신학과 심리학을 통합한 목회심리치료를 통해 치유적 관계 경험을 제공하고, 둘째, 발달 단계에 따른 생애주기적 목회 돌봄을 실천하며, 셋째, 사랑과 수용의 관계 속에서 하나님을 경험할 수 있는 신앙 공동체를 형성하는 것을 제안한다. 이러한 접근은 통제 중심의 신앙 구조를 관계 중심의 신앙으로 전환하는데 기여하며, 종교 중독의 예방과 회복을 위한 실천적 대안으로 기능할 수 있다. 새로운 목회 돌봄을 통해 개인의 병리적인 치유를 넘어 건강한 신앙 공동체의 영성을 회복하는 데 공헌할 수 있다. 결론적으로 종교 중독을 개인의 문제로 한정하지 않고 구조적 맥락에서 재해석함으로써, 한국 교회가 사랑과 은혜의 하나님을 경험하는 치유적 공동체로 나아가야 할 필요성을 제기한다.

This paper examines the phenomenon of religious addiction through a literature review and seeks to propose directions for pastoral care within the spiritual structure of Korean society. Historically, the church has played a significant role in fostering the spiritual growth of believers and forming faith communities. However, despite best intentions, some believers experience God not through love and grace but through fear, dread, and shame, resulting in a distorted form of faith. This phenomenon should not be understood merely as spiritual immaturity, but rather as an issue shaped by individual psychological vulnerabilities and structural problems within family and religious communities. Furthermore, this study emphasizes that religious addiction is actively formed and reinforced within family systems and faith communities. Accordingly, this study reviews key prior research on religious addiction to delineate its characteristics. In particular, it analyzes how religious addiction distorts one’s relationship with God and transforms faith into a structure of control and fear. Based on this analysis, the study proposes that intimate inner spiritual growth with God is a crucial element in both the prevention and recovery of religious addiction. Drawing on Donald Winnicott’s concept of the “holding environment,” this paper emphasizes the importance of pastoral care that nurtures believers’ inner spiritual development through faith. Specifically, this study suggests three approaches: first, providing pastoral psychotherapy integrating theology and psychology; second, practicing life-cycle–oriented pastoral care; and third, fostering a faith community. Such approaches contribute to shifting faith from a control-centered structure to a relationship-centered one and serve as practical alternatives for the prevention and recovery of religious addiction. Moreover, this pastoral care contributes to healing individuals and communities. By reinterpreting religious addiction within a structural context rather than limiting it to an individual problem, this study underscores the need for the Korean church to become a healing community centered on experiencing God’s love and grace.
