본 논문은 장공 김재준(1901-1987)의 설교신학을 공공성, 역사성, 변혁성이라는 세 가지 범주를 중심으로 분석하고, 이를 통해 현대 한국교회 설교의 갱신 방향을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 한국교회의 설교는 오랫동안 부흥회적 전통의 영향 아래 개인 구원과 내면적 신앙 형성에 집중해 왔으며, 그 결과 사회 현실에 대한 공적 응답과 변혁적 기능이 약화되었다는 비판을 받아 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 한국교회의 대표적 공공신학적 설교자로 평가받는 김재준의 설교를 칼 바르트의 말씀신학과 현대 공공신학의 지평에서 재조명하였다. 연구 대상은 해방 직후의 「교회는 무엇을 하려는가」(1946), 성서비평 논쟁기의 「복음의 자유를 확보하라!」(1950), 한일협정 직후의 「韓·日 條約 및 協定과 基督敎人의 姿勢」(1965) 등 대표 설교 세 편이며, 본 연구는 이를 공적 발화의 형성기, 논쟁기, 사회참여 심화기로 구분하여 시기별 설교의 신학적 구조를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 김재준의 설교는 교회의 사회적 책임을 강조하는 공공성, 시대 현실을 신학적으로 해석하는 역사성, 그리고 사회 변화를 촉구하는 변혁성이 유기적으로 결합된 통합적 구조를 형성하고 있었다. 이러한 설교는 한국교회의 사회참여를 신학적으로 정당화하였고, 1970-80년대 민주화 운동의 사상적 기반을 제공하였으며, 한국 공공신학 형성에 선구적으로 기여하였다. 또한 그의 설교는 단순한 종교적 위안이나 교리 전달이 아니라, 역사 현실 속에서 하나님의 뜻을 선포하는 공적 사건임을 보여주며, 신앙과 사회, 교회와 역사를 통전적으로 연결하는 신학적 실천으로 자리매김한다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 ‘현실 분석(Situational Analysis)―신학적 해석(Theological Interpretation)―변혁적 실천(Transformative Praxis)’이라는 3단계 공공신학적 설교 모델을 제안한다. 이 모델은 공공성을 설교의 지향으로, 역사성을 설교의 방법으로, 변혁성을 설교의 목적으로 규정함으로써 오늘날 한국교회 설교가 개인주의적 경향과 교회 내부의 폐쇄적 담론을 넘어 교회와 사회를 연결하는 공적 실천의 장으로 회복되는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이며, 한국적 맥락의 공공신학적 설교를 정립하는 학문적·실천적 자원으로 활용될 수 있다.

This study analyzes the homiletical theology of Jae-Jun Kim (1901-1987) through three structural categories—publicness, historicity, and transformability—and seeks directions for the renewal of contemporary Korean preaching. Korean preaching, long shaped by the revivalist tradition, has been criticized for weakening its public engagement with social realities and its transformative function. In response, this study reexamines the preaching of Kim, who is regarded as a representative public-theological preacher of the Korean church, from the perspective of public theology. The primary texts examined are three representative sermons: "What Is the Church to Do?" (1946), delivered immediately after National Liberation; "Secure the Freedom of the Gospel!" (1950), preached during the biblical-criticism controversy; and "The Korea-Japan Treaty and Agreements and the Christian's Stance" (1965), proclaimed after the conclusion of the Korea-Japan Treaty. These sermons are analyzed according to three historical phases: the formative period of public utterance, the period of doctrinal controversy, and the period of intensified social engagement. The analysis demonstrates that Kim's preaching formed an integrated structure in which publicness, emphasizing the social responsibility of the church; historicity, interpreting contemporary realities theologically; and transformability, calling for social change, are organically interwoven. His preaching theologically legitimized the social engagement of the Korean church, provided foundational resources for the democratization movement, and made pioneering contributions to the formation of Korean public theology. Moreover, his preaching is understood not as a mere religious comfort or doctrinal transmission but as a public event in which God's will is proclaimed within historical reality. Based on these findings, this study proposes a three-stage model of public-theological preaching: Situational Analysis, Theological Interpretation, and Transformative Praxis. This model defines publicness as the orientation of preaching, historicity as its method, and transformability as its purpose. In doing so, it may contribute to restoring contemporary Korean church preaching beyond individualistic tendencies and the closed discourse within the church into a sphere of public praxis that connects church and society. Furthermore, it may serve as an academic and practical resource for establishing a model of public theological preaching within the Korean context.
